Why no Lepto for dogs?
The leptospirosis vaccine is often considered a non-core, lifestyle-dependent vaccine for dogs because it historically carried a higher risk of adverse reactions compared to others, particularly in small/toy breeds. While modern, safer versions exist, concerns regarding short-lived immunity (around 12 months), limited strain coverage, and potential side effects (lethargy, vomiting, fever) cause some owners to avoid it, especially for low-risk dogs.
Dogs currently receiving the Lepto 2 vaccination, will require two doses of the Lepto 4 vaccination four weeks apart at time of booster vaccination. Following transition, in subsequent years, just one booster vaccination will be required as usual.
