My daschund-chi has recently developed a separation anxiety when my boyfriend leaves. She's been destroying pillows and paper products lately. It seems like this is a new development.

She also has an obsessions with chewing on pens. She gets on the computer desk to steal from the pen cup, and somehow ends up walking across the computer and having full conversations on Facebook Chat.

So we have given her Nylas to try to advert the chewing and anxiety (they are the only toys that hold up).

Any ideas why this would happen suddenly? We locked her in the bathroom today to try to see if that would help, and she did well in there (but we did remove the toilet paper and garbage).

When you said, "your boyfriend leaves", do you mean temporarily or permanently? If it's the latter, then maybe getting a new boyfriend might be the solution to your dog's problem.

    :D^^

He is involved in a trillion different activities, from a non-profit group to bowling, to whatever, so he's not home too often (no, he's not cheating, I promise).

The dog has attached to him. She's quite the daddy's girl.

Have you tried bringing your dog for a walk? In can help to lessen her separation anxiety if you keep her busy. Dogs are more emotional than humans and it may take some time to see the results but there's nothing wrong if you will try this.

Maybe making your dog busy too on some activities can help her forgot the loneliness. :p
Just like what had been suggested, a walk with her or playing with her might help.

A possible solution is to be actively involved in more things that you do with your dog. The idea is to get your dog to be more attached to you, rather than your boyfriend.
