The first living creature sent into space was a female dog named Laika launched by the former USSR on November 3, 195

    Pretty cool huh?

Oh, I didn't know that! But I feel sorry for her, I think she must have been terrified, all alone in a space:( . Was she ok? Did she come back? I hope yes. I can't stand when there are experiments on dogs. This is horrible:eek: .

 I hate when animals are tested on!!! If you won't do it to a person then don't do it to ANY animal! I am no activist but I just can't imagine doing something to a pet just to see if it is safe for me. There have to be other avenues of testing available.

Well keep in mind that this happened back in the 50s. They wouldn't get away with doing that now, I don't think....not with all the other ways of testing that we have now, ya know?

Oh heck no! PETA would have been on them like flies on a fresh doggie poo! I just found that fact interesting because I always thought it was a chimp not a dog.

The chimp you're likely referring to is the one that made it back ALIVE. That's why we tend to associate it with a monkey of some sort, I believe. It was the first successful return of a live mammal.

Laika died within hours of launching from overheating.:(
A favourite movie of mine is called Dogs In Space. It showed a lot of film of the launch with Laika.

That's an interesting fact. A sad one also. I hate to see animals tested on. Poor thing must have been petrified, it really makes my heart ache to even think about it. Typical russians. But every country is just as bad!
