Why was Ethan's body falling apart?
Ethan's body was falling apart in Resident Evil Village because the sentient mold that had resurrected him after his death in RE7 was losing its host, especially after his heart was ripped out, causing his regenerative abilities to fail and his body, essentially a mold construct, to crumble and calcify, signifying his final death. His body, already a mold imitation of his original self, couldn't sustain itself without the central control (like a heart) and energy source, reaching its limit after intense physical trauma.
Leon Kennedy is first introduced in Resident Evil 2 as a rookie police officer in the Raccoon City Police Department who escapes from Raccoon City following a zombie outbreak.
Why did Ethan deteriorate?
After everything Ethan went through, his cells reached their Hayflick limit . His body was falling apart because it could no longer regenerate. No heart also means no blood flow, which means no transport of the energy needed to regenerate. Ethan also never regrows entire limbs or body parts, he only reattaches them. Why did Ethan start to crumble?

Ethan Winters's hand turned to dust because it was a manifestation of his body's mold infection reaching a critical, fatal stage in Resident Evil Village, where his enhanced regeneration from the mold in RE7 finally gave out, causing calcification and decay after taking immense damage, particularly from Miranda and the Megamycete, revealing he was essentially a mold organism himself, not truly human. He could initially reattach limbs due to the mold's regenerative properties, but this final exposure overwhelmed his ability to sustain himself, leading to the powdery disintegration seen at the end.Who is the main character in Resident Evil?
